TIME’s Michael Lindenberger writes on one of the scenarios I’ve thought of myself as the happy middle solution to the gay marriage issue: strip all the tax breaks and legal rights from marriage, give them to civil unions, and let the religions sort out the rest. Gay and Straight couples are made legally equal, religions aren’t forced to compromise themselves by marrying gay couples, and for those gays who still want the religious ceremonies, there’s always the episcopalians.
